Description

Completed:  November, 2009

Materials:  welded glass, wire

The desert environment—air, color, natural fragility, and quality of light—inspired the site-specific work of Anna Skibska (Seattle).  Working with architects Jeremy Jones, DWL and Doug Sydnor, Douglas Sydnor Architect, Skibska designed Golden Alchemy, her assembly of 93 delicate amber-colored spheres to float 20 to 30 feet above the reading area of Appaloosa Library. The complexity of her work draws on organic forms found in nature.  Golden Alchemy brings the hues, shifting tone, and movement of a desert mirage indoors. In Skibska’s hands, amoebic clusters of glass capture both the natural and interior light of the library space, recalling the experience of sunlight filtering through desert air By providing a visual focus and counterpoint to the building’s strong linear design elements, Skibska enhances the public’s experience of the Library.

Each individual sphere that makes up Golden Alchemy is hand-sculpted by the artist using a technique she developed called the Skibska Method. The Skibska Method is a meticulous process in which glass is melted with a torch, drawing it into thin, irregular strands. These fine individual strands of glass are then welded onto larger pieces.  In fact Skibska’s glass sculptures have a formidable strength and the detail of twisted ribbons of glass created within a web of welded contradict the fragility of the material itself.

The changing light on a cloudy day during an initial site visit in December 2008 became the inspiration for the art work.  Nature became the starting point for the art, as it does in much of Skibska’s work.  The representation of the library became another strong design direction.   Anna dramatically re-enacts the everyday experience of sunlight filtering through desert air on a grand scale.  Nestled among this cluster of golden spheres, two orbs of different colors remind the viewer of the context of this natural spectacle.  A green and a blue orb draw attention to the elements of earth and sky by linking to the growth in the surrounding desert landscape.
