Homeplates

CRAIG SMITH
Historic Baseball Photos
Craig Smith has created black-and-white photographs of historic baseball mitts and masks at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. These photographs are placed on the outer walls of Scottsdale Stadium, adding to the visitor’s sense of an old-fashioned stadium environment.

CRAIG SMITH AND DAN COLLINS
Homeplates
Artists Craig Smith and Dan Collins worked as members of the Scottsdale Stadium design team with architecture firm HOK (Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum, Inc.) to create art for the traditional, stadium-style, red brickwork facility. The nine baseball-themed symbols featured in the building’s arcade frieze design represent the nine innings in a baseball game.

Pitcher’s Mound
Smith and Collins portray the distance between the pitcher’s mound—represented by a circular brick design—and home plate with a 60-foot-long bronze strip embedded in the concrete.

In 2020, the city of Scottsdale made renovations to Scottsdale Stadium. Those renovations included the refurbishment and relocation of Homeplates. Learn more about it in this Immerse blog post.
