Austin Deuel

The Chaplain

Austin Deuel’s bronze sculpture The Chaplain provides a gathering place for veterans and other special celebrations at Scottsdale Civic Center. Located near the northeast corner of Scottsdale City Hall, this 2009 sculpture honors veterans and their chaplains, who have served as spiritual advisors to soldiers and provided solace in a time of war.

Formerly, Scottsdale’s veterans had only a memorial plaque at Scottsdale Civic Center, which was small and could not accommodate large gatherings for special honorary ceremonies. The Chaplain was a community-initiated project, assisted by Scottsdale Public Art and the city of Scottsdale. The city supported the siting costs while the sculpture was paid for entirely by veteran fundraising efforts. Deuel also completed a monumental memorial for Vietnam veterans in San Antonio, Texas.
