A Vivid Gaze: Paintings by Frank Gonzales

Frank Gonzales paints with an intense observation of desert life in acrylic paintings of birds, flowers, cacti, and other natural forms, which are interrupted by strokes of bright color. Inspired at a young age by the unbelievable stillness and separation of taxidermied birds in natural history museum dioramas, he translates his love for the desert with an energetic, contemporary painting style.

Born in Mesa, Gonzales lives in Tempe, AZ. He was classically trained in painting at Mesa Community College, studying with Jim Garrison. He was then awarded with a full scholarship to Laguna College of Art and Design, in Laguna Beach, CA. His work is shown internationally and in the United States, and locally at PhICA (Phoenix Institute of Contemporary Arts) and this summer, at Tempe Center for the Arts.
