Sleight of Hand: Photography by Cherie Buck-Hutchison

In this exhibit Cherie Buck-Hutchison revisits her personal history to divine a feminine narrative within the patriarchal religious practices of her childhood. By poetically juxtaposing dual imagery from family photos, her intent is to create a newly understood concept of female leadership. Decades merge, uniting relatives from the 1950’s with others from the 1970’s. She creates the magical southwest of the future.

Buck-Hutchison points the lens squarely at herself, questioning her history as it reflects to the present. This alchemy presents new cultural traditions, and asks how to abandon archaic traditions and continue to
support and respect the potential for change.

Cherie Buck-Hutchison employs poetry, photography, video, ceramics and performance in her art practice. She lives in Phoenix, and has achieved a BFA in Intermedia from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. She was named one of the top 100 Creative in Phoenix, 2016 by the Phoenix New Times
