Canal Convergence Request for Public Art Proposals is Open!

We are now accepting submissions from artists who wish to propose large-scale, light-based public artworks for Canal Convergence 2021. All local, regional, and international artists— including architects, designers, and multimedia specialists—are invited to submit proposals that take into consideration the 2021 central theme: Art and Technology.

The technology revolution of the past 100 years has had a major impact on the world. The arrival of computers, the internet, and the modern digital age, for better or worse, has changed nearly every aspect of people’s daily lives. In a similar manner, the advent and evolution of these technologies have had a significant impact on the arts as both a subject matter and a medium. Canal Convergence aims to expand the understanding of modern technology’s role in artmaking with this year’s central theme.

We are excited to begin the process of selecting artworks for Canal Convergence 2021, and please know that we are here to help. In years past, we offered Canal Convergence Coffee Talks, where staff would be present at Phoenix-area coffee shops for an allotted time so artists could come and chat, ask questions about the call for art, learn more about the event, etc. Given that we are still in the midst of a pandemic, these “coffee talks” are going digital.

Now, not only local artists, but national and international artists can schedule a time to talk (30 minutes max.) with staff and get feedback on their ideas or proposals. The dates of these sessions are Thursday, February 25, and Tuesday, March 9, 2021. Please email Jennifer Gill, public art manager for Canal Convergence, directly at [email protected] to identify and schedule available times.
