Prickly Pear Skeleton Stump Lamp, 2021

In May, the full lunar phase is called a “flower moon.” Jim and Karla Elling make lamps using Karla’s handmade agave paper stretched over Jim’s welded armatures. These lamps are inspired by living seven decades in the Sonoran Desert. Night-blooming cereus, evening primrose, and agave-dipped prickly pear skeletons suggest luminous petals under a desert flower moon. The photo, Moon Cereus by R.C. and Clair Meyer Proctor, was printed in Arizona Highways, March 1973.
