The Spirit of Volunteerism
Commissioned and funded by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, Spirit of Volunteerism is a memorial to the late Jim Hill, a leader of spring training volunteers known as “The Commissioner.” This sculpture by Gerry Metz shows Hill holding out his left hand, motioning to the future, while his right hand rests on the shoulder of a young baseball player. For more than 20 years, he recruited and managed 150 volunteers each season to help raiser charitable funds for local youth projects by selling Giant’s Spring Training souvenirs to fans. He also worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs, mentoring youth while coaching baseball for 22 years and football for 17 years.
