Birdie Umwelt is a collection of sculptures and sandblasted designs located at the Mustang Transit Center and the Mustang Public Library in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Thinking about the differences in the way we humans and birds use and perceive spaces, I wondered what books in the nearby Mustang Library these creatures might find most compelling.”

— Mary Lucking

Birdie Umwelt comprises 20 bronze and stainless-steel sculptures of house finches reading different books that were selected by the artists and through a process of public voting. Additionally, the artwork includes a bird house that mimics the postmodern architecture of the library, and imagery of birds, feathers, and directional wording sandblasted into the pathways around the library and transit center.

CODAworx is an online resource to find and hire artists, creative teams, and qualified sub-contractors that are experienced in the creation of commissioned artwork. Every year they present the CODAawards to celebrate projects that most successfully integrate commissioned art into interior, architectural, or public spaces.

Starting this week, the top 100 entries of the CODAawards are featured on CODAworx and available for public voting. Only two projects will win the People’s Choice award this year, so it is up to you to make Birdie Umwelt a winning entry. Vote today, and tell all your friends and family to vote as well to support Scottsdale Public Art!
