IN FLUX Announces Artists to Create Temporary Public Artworks
Six cities across the Phoenix metropolitan area have selected emerging artists for the creation of temporary art installations around the Valley for public enjoyment. The partner cities – Avondale, Chandler, Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale, and Tempe – invited new and emerging public artists of all mediums to submit a portfolio, resume and a statement of intent.
The promotional partner Artlink, a Valley-based nonprofit supporting artists by providing necessary programs and resources to expand their careers, facilitated the call to artists on behalf of IN FLUX partner cities. The two organizations share similar goals to aid artists in expanding their skillset, apply creativity in innovative ways and garner recognition for their work.
The participating cities, locations and artists for this current cycle are as follows:
- In Avondale, Michelle Meyer will be creating a 3-D sculpture located on the northeast corner of 114th Avenue and Dale Earnhardt Drive.
- In Chandler, Lily Reeves will be creating artwork for multiple locations in the downtown area.
- In Glendale, Heather Bentz will be creating an art installation that will be in the lobby of City Hall.
- In Peoria, Lauren Lee will be creating a mural at Park West Mall. Doug Boyd and Jennifer Levine will be creating sculptures at the Main Library and the Sunrise Mountain Library respectively.
- In Scottsdale, Hector Ortega will be creating a 3-D sculpture at N. Scottsdale Road and E. Oak Street (N.E. Corner). Christopher Luper will be creating a 3-D sculpture at N. Scottsdale Road and E. Roosevelt Street (N.E. Corner). Yuke Li will be creating a mural at the City of Scottsdale water riser and the concrete SRP well site on the south side of Thomas Road between N 81st Way and N. 82nd Street. Shirley Wagner will be creating 3-D sculptures for Miller Plaza at N. Miller Road and E. Indian School Road (N.E. Corner). Amanda Clayton will be creating 3-D sculptures for the Scottsdale Quarter at N. Scottdale Road and N. Greenway Haden Loop (S.E. Corner).
- In Tempe, David Haff will be creating a 3-D sculpture for Tempe Beach Park, which will be located on the south side of Tempe Town Lake next to the bike corral off Mill and Rio Salado. Zach Lihatsh will be creating a 3-D sculpture for Daley Park on the corner of College and Encanto.
IN FLUX, now on its 10th cycle, is offering selected artists an opportunity to expand their skills, challenge their creativity and garner public recognition. Participants are receiving between $5,000-$10,000 as payment for a temporary works display for up to one year starting June 2022. In addition to funding, IN FLUX’s six partner cities offer artists a crucial platform to garner exposure that could lead to future commission work. The organization fosters the notion of the Valley as one art community, creating connections across city governments, local businesses, artists and audiences.
