IN FLUX Cycle 9

Request for Qualifications

Deadline – September 20, 2019, midnight (Mountain Standard Time)

Projects – Multiple opportunities throughout the Valley with IN FLUX Partner Cities: Peoria, Chandler, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Glendale

Opportunities range from $5,000 to $10,000

Eligibility: professional artists and artist teams. Artists commissioned in the previous Cycle 8 are not eligible for Cycle 9.

IN FLUX Cycle 9 Partner Cities invite artists across all disciplines to create temporary public artworks in a wide variety of locations throughout the Valley.

Project Information

IN FLUX demonstrates a holistic approach to temporary public art through a showcase of site-specific projects by visual artists working in various mediums and performing artists who specialize in dance, theatre, music, or spoken word. These opportunities provide artists a chance to expand their skills, challenge their creativity, and garner public recognition for their work. Presented simultaneously by six Partner Cities, IN FLUX fosters the notion of the Valley as one art community. IN FLUX creates connections between community organizations, city governments, local businesses, artists, and audiences.

IN FLUX partners seek to provide opportunity, experience, and education to emerging and established artists who want to enter the field of public art. These opportunities are well suited for artists with no public art experience but also offer a fresh approach for experts in the field. Arizona artists are strongly encouraged to apply.

Selection Process

Each partnering city will hold its own selection panel for its site(s). The selection panelists will make recommendations based on the specific nature of each site. Once these recommendations have been made, the IN FLUX partners will meet to determine final locations for selected artists to ensure placement is feasible and there is diversity within the IN FLUX collection for Cycle 9. Members of each panel will include artists, arts professionals, and community members.  The selection panels will meet in mid-October; artists will be notified shortly thereafter.

Selected artists will be contracted by each commissioning agency and work directly with the project manager designated by their assigned partnering organization. All artists will be notified of selection results via email in October and given the opportunity to request feedback from the selection panel.

Opportunity Categories

In your application submission, please include the opportunity you are interested in. This does not guarantee that the selection panel will place you in that specific opportunity; however, it will give the panelists a better idea of how you would approach this opportunity.

The following opportunities have been identified for Scottsdale (see the PDF linked below for all IN FLUX opportunities across the Valley):

  • Plinth at the northeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Oak Street
Concrete plinth for 3-D sculptural works. The size of the concrete mounting surface on the plinths is 40” x 40”. Outdoor/streetscape installation.
