Last Week to See I Am You, You Are Me: Portraits at the Civic Center Public Gallery

The Twins by Turner Davis, 2015. Sealed charcoal on canvas.

Still haven’t had a chance to see I Am You, You Are Me: Portraits, the current exhibition at the Civic Center Public Gallery? Well, you better hurry because this multidisciplinary exhibition is coming to a close on Monday, June 21, 2021. Visit the Civic Center Library to see all these amazing artists’ works in person, many of whom are graduates of the Herberger School of Art at Arizona State University, where Wendy Raisanen, our curator of collections and exhibitions, also graduated.

Expectations by Kara Roschi, 2016. Still from MP4 video with sound.

“As a graduate of the Herberger School of Art at Arizona State University, I would like to toot the horn for the many ASU School of Art alumni that are in this exhibition. The Herberger School of Art at ASU is one of the top art schools in the country, and I am so grateful that I was able to attend ASU.

“Every art class I was part of was a stimulating, enlightening experience. I use skills and knowledge acquired in the sculpture program every day (especially how to use power tools and how all types of art are made). This expertise is invaluable in my job as the curator of exhibitions and collections, taking care of the public art collection for the city of Scottsdale.

“All the different areas of the school—sculpture, painting, intermedia, wood, small metals, printing, ceramics, and fibers, and even the architecture and design school next door—formed a diverse community of inventive people who fully realized the value of creative thinking in all areas of life, not just artmaking.

“Out of 26 artists, there are 10 Herberger School of Art alumni exhibiting in the portraits show: Neil Borowicz, Turner Davis, Katherine Del Rosario, Becky Frehse, Dain Q. Gore, Brianna Noble, Kara Roschi, Ingrid Wells, Christopher Vena, and Johanna Virgil.

“My gratitude extends to all the talented artists who answered the call, during the pandemic, for portraits in this lovely exhibition. They are unique, insightful, and wise.”
