Scottsdale Public Art presents Native American ceramic artist Ron Carlos as the “Artist at Work” for the Creative Residency at the Scottsdale Livery Studio Space during September 2016.

Carlos is a descendent of both Pima and Maricopa tribes and is an enrolled tribal member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) located east of Scottsdale. For more than 20 years, Carlos has been practicing the traditional “paddle and anvil” pottery-making technique with hand-processed clay and paint gathered from natural sources within the SRPMIC. Carlos is also a teacher and mentor to his community, and passes along the traditional craft of pottery-making in the way of his ancestors.

Scottsdale Public Art will be hosting four events for the public during Ron Carlos’ Creative Residency:

Red-Clay Pottery Painting Workshop with Ron Carlos
Saturday, September 24. $25 per person.

Each participant will receive one plain pot made by Ron Carlos to paint with the locally gathered, natural red-clay paint. They will be fired by Ron at his home. (The public is not allowed to attend the firing, however Scottsdale Public Art staff will be on site to document the process.) Participants can pick up their fired pot and view the firing documentation at the Creative Residency closing reception on Sept. 29.
Tickets are $25, and the class is limited to 15.
